Frequently Asked Questions
How far is it and how long does it take?
Trip length is 9 river miles. Time depends on a number of factors: how much you paddle, wind direction and speed, how long you stop at the sandbars, etc. Plan for a minimum of 3 hours and if you just float with minimal paddling, it could take up to 8 hours. We recommend that you just relax and enjoy the journey and take a break on one of the sandbars (water levels permitting).
What should I bring?
Water bottle, snacks, towel (maybe an extra one to sit on or a cushion), water shoes or sandals, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat. Dry bag or waterproof (ziplock) bag for your phone, etc. Some extra clothes don’t hurt, or at least have them in your car - it’s always nice to put dry clothes on when you get off the river.
I want to do something different, like start farther north and paddle a longer stretch or turn this into a camping trip... how do I do that?

Are there rapids?
While there are rapids on some of the northern sections of the river, there aren’t any between the Sunrise and Wild River landings. But, the current can be strong even though it doesn’t appear that way, so always exercise caution.
Are there bugs?
If you’ve been in Minnesota for more than 5 minutes, then you know the answer to this. However, once you get out on the river, they are pretty minimal.
Will I see wildlife?
Yes! And the more quiet you are, the more you will see. I even saw a bear swim across the river downstream from me; it was very cool to see!
In my humble opinion, this is one of the main reasons this stretch is so great compared to those further south with more people and boat traffic.
